During these last weeks we have seen obituaries for, amongst others, Anthony Foley (Munster rugby coach), Jean Alexander (actress), Pete Burns (musician), and Bobbie Vee (singer). Some have died in old age, others suddenly and while still young.
Last week I read that Leonard Cohen is in failing health and addressing his own mortality by making sure all his affairs are in order before he dies. He wishes to leave his loved ones without any messy loose ends or uncertainties to sort out after he has gone. This doubtless means ensuring he has made sure a properly drafted will is in place, reflecting his instructions and wishes as to how his assets are distributed between his children and any other family members or friends after his death.
Rather than seeing this as something to be put off, he is embracing the challenge and finding great comfort in this as his physical health declines. At 82, and with all his mental faculties, he recognises how fortunate he is in being able to address these issues now, but for some they are less fortunate. It is never wise to leave such things until it is necessary, as it may be too late. As some find to their cost, mental health can deteriorate or death can be sudden, leaving relatives unsure of the deceased’s wishes or family fighting over what is left.
His advice for anyone facing death is to get on and make sure things are sorted properly: “it’s a cliché but its underestimated as an analgesic. Putting your house in order is one of the most comforting activities, and the benefits of it are incalculable.”
Silks’ advice is not to leave things too late. The process can be started at any age and stage of your life. It could and should be regularly reviewed to keep it in mine with your current circumstances and situation. It should not be rushed; rather careful thought should be put into any will: who you may wish to include and who you may wish to exclude.
